Mother still cries for justice for death of 4-year-old son

first_imgAfter 2 yearsAnna Persaud, the mother of four-year-old Mohan Ramkaran, who was killed by a reckless driver on the morning of March 15, 2017 is, still almost three years after the accident, calling for justice for her son’s unfortunate demise.Suspended Crime ChiefLyndon AlvesThe woman, who has been relentless in pursuing the course of justice for her son, is now at a standstill and uncertain of her next move after she was told by Top Cop Leslie James that a further inquest has now been requested into the matter.This follows an inquest which reportedly concluded with no clear indication as to whether the errant driver involved in the accident will be charged.Ramkaran, of Lot 108 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), was struck down and killed a short distance from his home.Guyana Times had reported that Ramkaran and his uncle had gone to purchase a ball at a nearby shop when the accident occurred.While returning home, the child was struck down and dragged several feet, and it was not until his uncle ran behind the driver to stop her, did the woman realised what had transpired.Dead: Mohan Ramkaran“The boy was waiting to cross with the two lil’ boys because he see the car coming so he was waiting for it to pass before they cross, but then she (the car driver) swerve into the grass corner and hook the child. She run over the child and she drag him, she didn’t stop. The boy (teenager) had to run behind the car and stop the car, and then she knows that she had the child under the car,” the child’s grandmother, Bibi Nazmoon Khan had said.Ramkaran was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital.Following the tragic accident, the child’s family was forced to take protest action after the Police refused to charge the driver.The driver, who is the daughter of now suspended Crime Chief Lyndon Alves, was placed on $20,000 station bail and was seen days after the accident driving on the roadways again.Vague responsePersaud related on Wednesday that frequent visits to the Police were met with vague responses and being pushed around.“The Commander would send us to look for case file, and then they tell us they waiting on this body and that body, but up to now…. three weeks ago we went to see the Police Commissioner and he told us that the matter didn’t reach his desk as yet, and then we were told that now they are seeking a further inquest. But is because the girl is the daughter of the Crime Chief,” the woman said, adding that she was praying for the day she would get justice for her son.This newspaper was reminded by relatives that Police Commissioner Leslie James was the Divisional Commander at the time of the accident.Crime Chief Alves has been suspended following several allegations of corruption made against him.Alves was suspended from duties on Monday to facilitate the probe into the allegations of corruption.In that matter, a Police Lance Corporal Detective who is reportedly linked to a criminal network was said to have the protection of Alves.The said rank’s phone number was reportedly discovered in the cellphone of now dead criminal Kelvin “Kelly” Shivgobin, who was shot and killed recently in the backlands of Black Bush Polder during a shootout with the Police.The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has since disclosed that a probe was launched by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).Alves was, in August of last year, handpicked with several others to serve as Deputy Commissioner alongside the Police Commissioner. He was handpicked by President David Granger after having been found to be “unbribable”.last_img
