The Authority continued to show its support in marketing the destination for cricket with a contest on its website www.DiscoverDominica.com. Many people participated in the contest but there could only be 5 winners who won tickets for each day of the cricket held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium between West Indies vs. Australia. The five winners, George Maxwell, Suprian George, Romona Joseph, Augustine Pascal and Skenith Jno. Baptiste received their tickets at the Discover Dominica Authority’s office on Friday and Monday before the start of the cricket games. The winners expressed delight in winning the tickets and ensured that they would participate in further competitions held by the Discover Dominica Authority. The contest was opened to all persons interested in attending the games, even in the region if they knew that they would be attending the games. The Discover Dominica Authority is committed to continue marketing the destination for hosting of sporting events and welcomes the possibility of more sporting activities being held on the island which would attract persons regionally and internationally.**Dominica participated in “NBC’s the Nate Berkus Show” destination promotion**The Discover Dominica Authority participated in the promotion of the destination on NBC’s the Nate Berkus Show. The DDA offered the prize of a honeymoon vacation for a couple on the Nate Berkus Show. The show was aired in mid-September where the lucky couple Paula and Carlos Marcias were named the winners of an expense paid trip to the island of Dominica as a honeymoon/anniversary getaway. The couple informed us that they were very excited to have won the trip and started researching on the destination immediately. The prize included a 4-night stay sponsored by the Rosalie Bay Resort, a whale watching trip sponsored by Dive Dominica with tours within the Morne Trois Pitons National Park and other expenses sponsored by the Discover Dominica Authority. The couple stated that this was a most excellent vacation and they wished they were not leaving so soon. **Discover Dominica Authority hosted UK Tour Operator and journalist*The Discover Dominica Authority hosted UK tour operator Tropic Breeze from April 25 -27, 2012. Tropic Breeze is a specialist Caribbean Tour Operator. They pride themselves in knowing both their clients and product and creating bespoke holiday packages for couples, families and singles. The average spend of their customers is £2800 per person for a 7 night trip to the Caribbean, and many guests are interested in the culture of the countries they are visiting. Managing Directors Jo Plummer and Mark Fitch have both visited Dominica briefly before and were keen to expand their product knowledge and be able to increase business to the island. Site inspections were arranged for them at various properties throughout the island as well as meetings with local ground tour operators. The company was looking to increase their relationships with operators on the island, increase their knowledge of the island as well as to increase their offering of properties to their clients. Though their stay was short the operators were pleased to have been able to see such growth in the type of accommodation available on the island.The Discover Dominica Authority hosted UK journalist Helen Saunders of the Spirit & Destiny Magazine. The journalist was on island from April 25 – 30, 2012 with stays at the Jungle Bay Resort, homestays at the Kalinago Territory and Papillote Wilderness Retreat. Spirit & Destiny is the UK’s leading magazine for all things alternative, designed to feed the mind, body and spirit. It aims to include inspirational features on holistic health, natural beauty, emotional intelligence and organic lifestyles. It is a monthly publication with a circulation of 52,369 throughout the UK to mainly women interested in spiritually and holistic health. Helen was pleased to have the chance to live with the Kalinago people to experience their culture and practices with tours through their herbal gardens, the Touna Village experience and the Kalinago Barana Aute. Other tours to the mushroom farm in Pond Case with the Luke family, the Whale Watching experience and Screw’s Sulphur Spa, gave Helen the opportunity to experience the island in its rich natural beauty.**Discover Dominica Authority held its Tourism Youth Congress**Discover Dominica Authority held its annual Tourism Youth Congress on May 3, 2012 as part of activities for Tourism Awareness Month. Students from Pierre Charles Secondary School, Portsmouth Secondary School, Castle Bruce Secondary School, North East Comprehensive School, Convent High School, Dominica Grammar School, Dominica Community High School, Wesley High School and the Saint Mary’s Academy will took part in the event. The Youth Congress mirrored on the model used by the Caribbean Tourism Organization and seeks to develop students’ ability to prepare and present speeches. In Round 1 of the competition, each student spoke for three minutes on the topic “What is the impact of vagrancy on tourism? What options do we have for dealing with vagrancy and tourist harassment in Dominica?”The top five students of the first round will advanced to Round Two and presented on the topic“Your Community, the next tourist paradise?” The Castle Bruce Secondary School represented by Nayana George who the congress and will move on to represent Dominica at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Tourism Youth Congress in St. Kitts and Nevis in October 2012. The local Youth Congress was held at the Arawak House of Culture on Thursday May 3rd 2012 at 10 am. The event was broadcast live on Kairi FM. Sponsors for the Tourism Youth Congress were the AID Bank, Rainforest Aerial Tram, Rainforest Riding, Garraway Hotel, Fort Young Hotel and Cool Breeze Tours Ltd. **Tourism Awareness Month Official Opening and Tourism Industry Recognition Awards.**The Discover Dominica Authority held its Tourism Industry Recognition Awards and Official Opening of Tourism Awareness Month on Monday April 30th at the Krazy Koconuts. The ceremony recognized the stakeholders across the industry who have demonstrated commitment to the development of their sub -sector and tourism as a whole.
