Q&A with Daily Wildcat sports editor

first_imgDT: Arizona is 5-0 with four one-possession wins. What contributes to that late game success especially considering Solomon’s youth?DW: Solomon has taken care of the ball especially well down the stretch of games, as all four of his interceptions have come in the first half of games. He has been nearly flawless in the second half of games this year.Combine that ball security with an Arizona defense that improves significantly in the second half, and it’s not a surprise that Arizona has outscored opponents 125-63 in the second half of games and is 5-0. Daily Trojan: Arizona is coming off an impressive upset of then-No. 2 Oregon in Eugene. What did Arizona do well that game that allowed the team to pull off the win?Daily Wildcat: Arizona’s upset of then-No.2 Oregon in Eugene may have seemed improbable for the majority of the nation, but really it just same old, same old for the Wildcats. The Wildcats put up 208 rushing yards behind the two-headed monster of Nick Wilson and Terris Jones-Grigsby. Not to mention the 129 receiving yards the duo recorded against the Ducks.Combine several timely second-half stops from a bend but don’t break defensive unit, and Arizona did to Oregon exactly what its been doing to opponents all season. DT: Arizona opened as a 2.5 point underdog at home against unranked USC. Do you think that’s accurate or is Arizona getting disrespected?DW: Is it accurate? Probably not. Does Arizona feel disrespected? Probably not.Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez dismissed talk of disrespect on Monday during his weekly press conference by saying he understands why USC is favored.Players echoed his statements by saying they’re glad that USC is favored. “I’m glad we [are] the underdog, that just keep[s] the guys focused [on] the task at hand,” UA safety Will Parks said. DT: Prediction?DW: Arizona usually keeps things interesting so naturally I’m predicting a double-digit win at home for the Wildcats.Arizona 35, USC 24.center_img USC heads into the desert this weekend to take on undefeated Arizona. The 10th-ranked Wildcats, led by redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon, are riding high after toppling Oregon. Daily Trojan sports editor Aubrey Kragen sat down with Daily Wildcat sports editor Roberto Payne to provide USC fans with an idea of what to expect about the ’Cats on Saturday night. DT: How are the Wildcats compensating for the loss of standout running back Kadeem Carey this year?DW: Ka’Deem Carey was one of the best players in Arizona history and his departure definitely sent waves around Tucson. However, the team hasn’t missed a beat since he left for the NFL. The Wildcats are 27th in the nation and first in the Pac-12 in rushing offense behind the duo of Wilson and Jones-Grigsby.I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted the team having such a dominant run game without Carey.last_img read more

Could Skype Offer Salvation For Windows Phone?

first_imgTags:#Microsoft#mobile#Skype#Windows Phone 8 With more consumers trading in and out of phones more often, Microsoft’s opportunity to hook new users increases. Given Windows Phone’s still anemic market share, the window of opportunity—as it were—is slim. Rather than compete on equal terms, therefore, Microsoft should exercise an unfair advantage to leapfrog its competitors. It’s called Skype.Improving Skype’s Mobile Experience…Skype already runs fine on Android and iOS, of course. But the experience is a bit disjointed. It remains very much an app that you run on your phone, rather than an integrated element of the phone itself. I felt this pain while traveling in London a year ago. I needed to do a conference call but didn’t want to pay AT&T’s punitive roaming charges. So I ran into St. Pancras Station, which offers free Wi-Fi, and dialed into the call using Skype. I paid exactly $0.00 for the call, and the call quality was surprisingly excellent, given the quality of the Wi-Fi.Unfortunately, at the time Skype didn’t support Bluetooth, so I found myself moving my iPhone to my ear and back to a position where I could check calendar, a presentation, etc. While Skype Mobile now supports Bluetooth, it continues to lag in other ways.…Especially For Windows PhoneParticularly if you’re using Windows Phone 8. Ironically, while Microsoft calls Windows Phone 8 and Skype “a match made in heaven,” the Skype experience is actually better on iOS, Android and even Blackberry because Skype Video, among other things, is available on these platforms, but not Windows Phone.Yes, you read that right. Microsoft’s Skype is better on every platform other than the one it actually owns. That’s sad. It’s also a missed opportunity. As much as Microsoft may pledge to deliver a “common set of experiences across multiple platforms and devices” for Skype, the reality is that it needs to provide an even better experience on its home turf. No, I’m not arguing for Microsoft to cripple Skype on rival platforms. That would be counterproductive as the Skype network becomes more valuable the bigger it becomes. But imagine a Windows Phone experience with Skype completely integrated into the address book, dial screen, etc. Suddenly Skype isn’t merely an app that runs on your phone, but actually becomes your phone.Would The Carriers Go Along?Microsoft has stated its intention to keep a consistent Skype experience across devices, but surely Microsoft could make that experience deeply integrated into the Windows Phone UI? Users would love this, as it would allow them to “make a call” and not worry about whether it were going out over Skype or a carrier’s network. In areas rich with wifi but poor on cell phone reception, it would be a huge benefit, as Tom Barber notes. Some, however, worry that the telecom providers would never buy in: It’s a valid point, but it may be a few years too late. After all, carriers no longer look to voice to pay the bills, and instead seek to monetize data. Skype now powers a third of global voice traffic, and there’s reason to believe carriers will happily offload more of that traffic to make way for more profitable data services.Even if they were inclined to quibble with Microsoft building a Skype-centric Windows Phone experience, surely Microsoft is less of a threat than Apple and Samsung’s mobile dominance has been, and potentially offers a hedge against these leading vendors. Microsoft, for all its problems, has shown a willingness to share success with its partners. Microsoft needs to place some big bets to take share in mobile. An integrated Skype experience for Windows Phone 8 feels like a smart move, and a bet worth making. Maharashtra stares at severe water crisis

first_imgWith the arrival of the monsoon getting delayed, Maharashtra’s dams are left with only 6.61% of the total capacity of water. Except for the Konkan division, water availability in the remaining five divisions has dropped to single digit. The Aurangabad division which covers Marathwada is the worst affected, with only 0.53% of it’s total capacity.According to data from the Water Resources Department, the Amaravati division has 6.38% of its capacity compared to 11.67% in the corresponding period last year. In the Nagpur division, the availability is 5.68% as against 11.56% in 2018. The Nasik and the Pune divisions are left with 4.98% and 6.2% water respectively compared to 14.98% and 19.61% last year. The Konkan region however has 25.41% water in its dams against 34.13% last year. Eight out of nine major dam projects in the Aurangabad division are left with no water as of now. Correspondingly, the number of tankers deployed across the State has increased to 6,597 — 6,382 privately owned and 215 government owned — from 6,443 in just a week between June 3 to June 10. Last year, in the same week, 1,777 tankers were deployed. As per data from the Water Supply and Sanitation department, 5,243 villages and 11,293 hamlets are being supplied water using tankers. In a related move, the State government has decided to finalise the detailed project report for interlinking dams. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the dams would be interconnected with pipelines and a supply network would be created across the region. The plan, under consideration for the last few years, will be implemented with the help of the newly formed Jal Shakti Ministry at the Centre. “We are working to develop a Marathwada water grid. Five detailed project reports are ready and work on the final one is on. We are going to connect all dams in Marathwada,” the CM said in Aurgangabad recently. The number of cattle in 1,591 fodder camps across the State is 10,35,438 with the majority being in Beed, Solapur and Ahmednagar. Questions have been raised over the extraordinary large number in Beed and Ahmednagar district and an inquiry has been ordered to check whether there are any irregularities.last_img read more

Welcome to the world of the emerging brand ambassador, who has gone from playing cursory mannequin to strategic co-creator. Because brand endorsements are no longer just about mind-boggling currency contracts, big-budget photo shoots and well-promoted public appearances. From creative inputs to marketing mantras, stars are constructively contributing to the development of the brands.Star:  Hrithik RoshanSignature Line: The Dhoom 2 dude worked with an in-house design team on a clean and classic collection with shirts in silk and linen, tees and embellished denims.Price: Rs 1,100 onwardsEven as the definition of brand endorsements expands, fashion icons are increasingly turning designers and it’s no wonder that Bollywood is making the most of this new trend. While traditional jewellery designing labels have long been roping in celebrity names like Sunita Kapoor, Manali Vengsarkar, Maheep Kapoor and Farah Khan Ali to design signature lines and add sheen to their brand value, it is Bollywood’s youth brigade which is pushing sports stars to the back benches in the co-creating line-up.So even as Sachin Tendulkar’s co created line of health foods, called Sunfeast Sachin’s Fit Kit, was launched in collaboration with ITC Foods in March, it is Hrithik Roshan’s Signature Line for John Players that is giving fans the chance to dress like the cool Dhoom 2 dude. Classy silk and linen shirts with gel prints and placement embroidery, embellished denims and cargos bring Roshan’s style statement to fans’ wardrobes.Says Atul Chand, vice-president (marketing), ITC’s Lifestyle Retailing, “Brand endorsements by celebrities have been happening in the Indian market for quite some time across product categories. However, if brands are able to create offerings that take the endorser’s personal attributes and infuse that into the product, it makes for a rich blend that can offer more value to consumers.” Chand explains that with the Signature Line, ITC has attempted to take the association between the brand and the ambassador from one of endorsement to one of co-creation. “This has made the association stronger and leaves a lasting impact on consumers. The line enables consumers to access Hrithik’s personal style preferences through John Players,” says Chand.Star: John AbrahamSignature Line: Abraham and Wrangler worked together to bring his trademark comfort quotient into the collection with low-rise jeans, linen shirts and tees for men and racer backs, halters and hoods for the girls.Price: Rs 800 to Rs 4,000And just like Roshan, denim brand Wrangler’s “21st century urban cowboy” John Abraham, too, has launched a premium prt denim line called John Abraham by Wrangler. Darshan Mehta, CEO, Arvind Brands, says, “Testimonial advertising by celebrities has existed for years. Today, evolved consumers understand and know the stars’ life and profile and are looking at a closer brand fit.” The stars, in return, understand that they have a shelf life and they realise that this is an opportunity to create business interest and outlive their shelf life through a brand, believes Mehta. The launch of the sub-brand saw the company’s advertising relations with Abraham change to a business relationship. And it’s obvious that a sound business brain ticks behind the biker boy veneer, when Abraham says, “Consumers today are looking for something less mass, they seek individuality, thereby creating their own style quotient. They are looking for something with a thought behind it and that is what we have hoped to achieve with this line. The collection is a true reflection of my life and what I would wear daily.”Just as Wrangler created a cobrand with country singer George Strait in America, they have created an independent identity for Abraham’s line with a different set-up, packaging, fixtures and look. Besides J-fronted, zip-on straight leg, low-rise denims and funky linen shorts for the boys, girls too can borrow style tips from Abraham’s wardrobe, with denim skirts, racer back tops, halters and hoodies.Star: Celina JaitleySignature Line: The former beauty queen drew inspiration from classic textiles and lace for a range of cocktail saris and Jashn’s designers gave shape to her vision.Price: Rs 10,000 onwardsAnd it is what Bollywood bombshell Celina Jaitley wears in the public eye that has resulted in her bagging a cocreator deal as well. Jaitley, who recently launched her signature line of “cocktail and bridal saris” for Jashn, is wearing her new “visionary” avatar with elan. “I don’t like being termed a mannequin. I’m extending my artistic side with this venture,” says Jaitley, claiming her line sold out in two weeks. “I started the trend of wearing lace saris and then many in Bollywood followed suit. Industry people and fans started noticing my inclination towards saris. Jashn was monitoring this and came up with the idea of creating my own brand,” says Jaitley. “I’m not a designer, I’m a brand. I’m lending my name to a sari that has been designed to my specifications,” clarifies Jaitley who, besides the lace and sequin-splattered saris, is now working on a bridal line and is hoping to salvage Bengali textiles, kantha embroidery, gota and zardozi work. “I want to bring the romance of the’60s back with an entire range of shararas and ghararas,” says Jaitley with enthusiasm. As for the actual designing process, Jaitley believes in working like international brand names such as Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, “who have a certain style statement and a team of designers who bring their vision to life”. Abraham has also partnered with Sally Dayton (Wrangler’s international designer) and Ramneek Walia (its Indian designer) on his collection. “While the line reflects my vision, the designers have lent their creative and style inputs to make this design dream come true,” says Abraham, who is now hoping to take his signature line to foreign shores. “A consumer base exists wherever there is a Bollywood audience,” asserts Mehta.Star: Zayed KhanSignature Line: Khan wanted his funky image to come through in the hip range of 12 styles and showed preference for studs, rivets and metal accents.Price: Rs 1,785 to Rs 2,485Star: Kareena KapoorSignature Line: She added Bollywood bling with a diamond-studded line. The Citizen team combined her love for mother-of-pearl and Swarovski with metallic and leather straps for a separate line.Price: Rs 4,690 onwardsAnd an audience that is willing to shell out big bucks for a piece of their favourite celebrity. Price points for these signature lines are obviously higher than those for the brands’ basic lines. Jaitley explains, “A celebrity’s association adds value and can lift a label from a local entity to a widely recognised brand. Jashn is Lucknow based and is known all over the country today.” Mehta attributes it to the higher quality of imported material used, and superior production values. And even as the new Khan kid on the block, Zayed Khan, recently launched his Rockstar line of funky and cool shoes in collaboration with ID Shoes, and Citizen Watches launched two exclusive ‘diamond’ and ‘fashion’ collections with brand ambassador Kareena Kapoor, here’s a tie-up trend that is on the upswing. So even as Shah Rukh Khan provides design inputs on a signature Monaco Sixty Nine limited edition chronograph for Tag Heuer, we brace ourselves for more business bargains as celebrities turn designers and entrepreneurs and brands attempt to make the most of their starry appeal.advertisementadvertisementadvertisementlast_img read more
