The Southwest Washington Regional SWAT team responded to the Ridgefield area Thursday night after hearing reports of an armed man suspected of being a threat to others. After arriving on scene, deputies determined the man wasn’t a threat and canceled the response.Patrol deputies were dispatched to reports of a disturbance with weapons around 9 p.m. in the 29100 block of Northwest 41st Avenue, according to emergency dispatch logs. The SWAT team was then called out, said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Fred Neiman.Attempts to reach the reportedly armed suspect were unsuccessful. After further investigation on the scene, officers determined the suspect with weapons was not a threat to anyone else, Neiman said. At that point the SWAT call was canceled.“(If someone didn’t commit a crime and isn’t a threat) we really don’t have any reason to confront someone and cause them to do something that would cause us to react,” he said.Neiman said it isn’t typical for SWAT to respond and be canceled, but he said it’s good for people to call 911 if they are legitimately concerned.“We’d rather have people in good faith call to report their concerns to us than not report it and something happens,” he said.
