So it’s quite fitting that Canyon Speedway Park near Phoenix hosts its annual Mid-Summer Classic on Saturday night, July 9.Following an open practice tonight from 7-10 p.m., Saturday’s Mid-Summer Classic atop the 1/3-mile clay oval will feature a full slate of that includes Arizona Differential IMCA Modifieds.Saturday tickets are $16 with a $3 discount for military, seniors and students. Children ages 7-12 are $6, with children six and under admitted free. VIP passes are available for $20.
BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island boys’ soccer team beat Ellsworth for the first time in over a decade Friday by beating the 2-1 over the Eagles in their final home game of the season.The 80 minutes of play were fast, physical tense. With tensions running high, numerous fouls were called on both teams throughout the game.Despite the pace, though, both teams played well enough defensively to keep each other at bay in the first half. The game was scoreless at halftime.MDI put up the first goal of the game just three minutes into the second half when freshman Jose Chumbe scrambled past several Ellsworth defenders to knock in the ball with 36 minutes, 59 seconds left. The Eagles answered at 30:04 with a goal by Jack McKechnie.This is placeholder textThis is placeholder textFans of both teams remained equally vocal throughout the second half, and the teams remained tied for most of it. The players pushed harder and harder as the game went on, with MDI wanting its first win over Ellsworth in over a decade and the Eagles wanting to maintain their long winning streak.Finally, with 2:45 left in the game, MDI senior Adam Bygdeson scored the winner. The Trojans couldn’t contain their excitement as they embraced. As time expired, MDI fans erupted in celebration as the rest of the team rushed the field.Ellsworth (8-5-1) also lost 2-0 to the John Bapst Crusaders on Monday, and MDI (6-6-2) beat the Hermon Hawks 6-1 that same day. The regular season is now complete for both teams. Both are set to participate in the Class B playoffs this Friday, Oct. 21.
